It is 1897 and The Music Hall Royale are presenting their musical of Charles Dickens’ unfinished novel, with the audience choosing from multiple endings.
This was Melbourne’s first theatrical performance post Covid-19. It was rehearsed and performed under strict protocols and regulations with the actors in masks, socially distanced and a boutique audience of ten for each performance.
A grid of 1.5 metre squares was ruled up on the stage, props and costume were one-touch only, there was no backstage or wings, all actors were to be onstage at all times and the theatre was ‘aired out’ at interval.
