I transposed this production of A Chorus Line from the 1970s to 2011 when it was performed. Having seen the show a few times, I’d always felt the adherence to the era in which it was created removed the immediacy of relevance to the audience. It only took a small few reference tweaks, some re-imagined choreography and costumes that reflected a 2011 audition room. I didn’t want a mustard onesie to distract the audience from recognizing that ACL is not merely a period piece, it may also reflect today and be about them. After all, the show is a celebration of anyone who has ever stuck their neck out and put themselves on the line for work, community, life and love.
